Surprise Birthday/Easter Trip

So in the month of March I had this idea to drive up to Utah to surprise Austin's mother for her birthday. It also happened to be the day after Easter. So Austin arranged with his step-father & we both got work off. We (Austin) decided to leave Friday evening & drive all night so that the kids would sleep. Austin came home from work early to take a nap while I got everything together to load in the car. We left our house about 6 PM. I drove first so Austin could fall asleep again. We stopped 4 times for Jhett to pee & once for dinner. I was only able to make it 6 hours to Page then my eyes started rolling in the back of my head so Austin took over. He drove for 2 hours (I only slept one of those hours) then he said he was too tired to drive, so I took over again & drove the rest of the way. Jhett slept a total of 2 hours the entire drive. He was like a zombie in the backseat with his eyes glued open. Tredd slept 3. Enough said. We will NEVER drive all night again. We arrived to the house 6:30 AM.

So I had this vision on what it would be like to surprise my MIL. The plan was for Austin to be in his UPS uniform. He was going to be holding flowers, then we got the idea of getting a giant box & putting the kids in it. I was going to hide in a bush & film the surprise. Well needless to say none of this happened. It was still completely dark when we got there & my MIL was still in bed sleeping. So we improvised. Austin had Tredd & the flip camera in hand, I had Jhett. We tiptoed to the room where we flipped on the lights & yelled SURPRISE!!! We didn't get her reaction on camera :(. Austin & I were completely pooped. We set up the portacrib, layed Tredd down & then crashed ourselves. Jhett hit this 'High' when we got there & wouldn't sleep.
When we woke up, Bompa Bernie (Lisa's dad) was there with a Uhaul that had Lisa's piano in it from AZ. We sat around & visited for a little while looking at old photos of Lisa from highschool.

Bompa & Jhett.

While looking through the pictures we found a few of Bompa sleeping, we thought we would add to the collection. He literally slept like this for 2 hours!!!

Being that it was the day before Easter I thought it would be fun to go a mall & get pictures with the Easter Bunny. So Lisa wrote down the address for the mall in Sandy which was about 20 min away. We punched the address in our GPS. We ended up driving to downtown SLC to the mall's coorperate offices. Austin remembered seeing a mall off of the freeway so we turned around & headed back to that mall. It actually was the mall we were trying to get to all along. Well on the way Jhett fell asleep in the car so when we got to the mall & he got out he peed his pants. He ofcourse starts hysterically crying. It didn't help that Austin got super mad at him about it. We marched straight to Children's Place to buy him new pants & underwear. He was NOT a happy camper, but I had to get a picture of him.

Then it was off to see the Easter Bunny. We got in line & while waiting Austin was outside of the perimeter getting cameras ready when a worker walked up to him & told him to put away his cameras. It was freaking retarded, he wasn't even in line with us, he was going to take a picture from a distance. So we left & didn't get a picture with the Easter Bunny.

The trip was almost a complete bust until we passed a Wendy's that had a huge frosty on the top with a sign FREE JUNIOR FROSTY'S ON SATURDAY. So we pulled in the drive thru & asked for 8 frosty's & a large french fry. They were good!

That night there was an adult dinner planned with all of Lisa's siblings & their spouses for her birthday. We were lucky to be invited. We ate at La Jolla Groves. It was such a cute place. This is what the inside of the resaurant looks like. It's like you are eating underneath lemon trees. In the enterance there were real trees so the place smelled like citrus blossoms. YUM!

The Gang.

Big thanks to Bompa for treating us to dinner & dessert. It was delicious!

Easter Morning the kids discovered the Easter bunny had left them baskets of goodies & hid eggs in all sorts of crazy places.

Sunday was the only day the sun really came out to play the entire time we were there. So we played at the park behind the house. The boys loved the swings!

It even got windy enough to fly the kites the Easter Bunny brought. Jhett got the hang of it really fast. It was so cute watching him run to get the kite in the air.

Jhett also got Thomas Uno cards. So we played that game a few times.

Austin took Jhett on bike rides.

Sunday night we went & visited Grandma Noni. Mona brought such pretty flowers to put on her grave.

Monday was Lisa's actual birthday. However she was very sick in bed but was kind enough to call down to the dinosaur museum in Thanksgiving point to see if they would except her pass without her being there. They said they would so we headed there.

The museum was Awesome! So many cool, hands on things for kids & adults if they want to, to do.

Jhett has now found a new love for dinosaurs. We watch Jurassic park at least once a day. It was a neat place. I recommend checking it out. Afterwards we ate at the deli cafe & it was so good! Jhett actually ate most of the dinosaur chicken nuggets. This was huge because I usually can't get him to eat hardly anything. We also went shopping, or should I say tried. All of the boutique's I wanted to look at were closed. It was pretty retarted that things are closed Sunday- Monday up in Utah. Monday night we enjoyed a scrumptious dinner at Texas Roadhouse in honor of Lisa's birthday. It was such a bummer her & Olivia were sick the entire time we were there.

We decided to leave Tuesday morning. When we woke up it was snowing! It snowed pretty hard for the first 3 hours of the trip. Amazingly, the kids slept more on the way home & we didn't have to stop near as much. Austin got a speeding ticket in Page right outside the reservation. That sucked. Nothing went as planned, but we still had fun relaxing & not working. It was definately a weekend to remember.

Big thanks to the four of them for letting us take over their home & invading their space! We sure love you Lisa, Fred, Felicia, & Olivia!

  1. I am sure it was a pain getting there and back but what great memories for the boys to have. What great pictures so they can look back and remember all the family trips!
